Summer Update 2005
GMB YOUNG MEMBERS SUMMER LINE UP

As I’m sure you’re aware the Live 8 event is a matter of weeks away. Unless you’re lucky enough to get your hands on a golden ticket for the gig in London there is another fantastic way to support ‘Make Poverty History’ going on in Edinburgh on the 2 July . As the leaders of the world’s richest countries gather in Scotland for the G8 summit, a group of GMB young members will be joining tens of thousands of others in demanding trade justice, debt cancellation and more and better aid for the world’ poorest countries.

The following week the Tolpuddle Summer Academy begins. Having successfully sent a group last year we intend to do the same again. You will join trade unionists from up and down the country, across a range of unions and also to be joined by a delegation from the German TUC, DGB. You will camp the week prior to the festival and take part in a mixture of visits, discussion groups, helping to prepare for the festival itself and of course the social side (plenty of music, films and the Workers Beer Company bar).

There will be lots to do with the opportunity to pick and choose what you fancy. Some of the issues to be covered are; Fair Trade, Organising Young Workers Today, Make Poverty History, Justice for Columbia, Fighting Racism and much more. The week culminates in the festival itself. We cover all costs for the week, you just need to make sure you’re available! The website has a diary of last year’s summer academy by a couple of the young members who attended. Places for both of these events will be allocated on a first come first served basis. Please contact me as soon as possible for further information or to book a place .

Alongside these events we already have a team going to work at the Reading festival. The money they raise will go to support a charity helping the street children of Cambodia. If you are interested in helping out in this way please look on the website for details for upcoming events.

After all that at the end of the summer we will be holding a meeting at our Regional Office in Chessington on Saturday 15th October .

The meeting will discuss the best way to establish a Young members Committee, what Young Members would like the committee to do, and what campaigns the Young members section should be getting involved in. We also anticipate running some workshops during the day and having some guest speakers. I will write out nearer the time with some more information.

This is your chance to make a difference and do something different. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
