Young Members have their Say
The common misconception that Young people don't care about politics simply isn't true. GMB Young members jointly hosted a social policy forum with the Young members section of the labour party on the 13th December. It was the first time we've put on an event like this and I'm pleased to say it was a great success. Young trade unionists came from across the region to take part in the Big Conversation . This is the government's major consultation exercise to establish priorities for the future. They want to listen and it turns out GMB Young members have something to say.

In the morning we were joined by David Lepper MP and everyone had the chance to put their questions to him. We quizzed him about the inbuilt discrimination in the minimum wage, the lack of affordable housing for Young people and university tuition fees. The group then split into workshops where we had a real chance to get our teeth stuck firstly into questions about crime and anti-social behaviour ~ how do we tackle the binge drinking culture, how do we build communities to involve local people? ~ and then in the afternoon education ~ what do we think of university fees and the impact they have on poorer families, and how can lifelong learning change perceptions about education?

It was really good to see the groups exploring the potential for trade union's to get involved and the many different ways they can support Young people. A report of the day has now been sent off and hopefully our comments will help shape the next manifesto.

Thanks to the members who worked at last years festivals and helped to fund the event.
