Phillippine Prison conditions for children

One of the regions youth officers has been so incensed by the poor treatment of child prisoners in the world following a report that went out on the ITV news ( click here ) specifically mentioning the Philippines, that he drafted the following email.

If you wish to support the campaign please send a copy to the Embassy of the Philippines: embassy@philemb.co.uk . It may also be helpful to send to the appropriate departments in the UN. Amend this email if you wish, or send it as it stands.

      Dear Your Excellency

I, like many people over the last couple of days, was absolutely disgusted to see the conditions by which, young boys (children) are put into prison for minor crimes and kept in custody with adults who have been responsible for committing such heinous crimes as Murder, Assault, Rape and Child abuse.

How a child could be placed into such danger, simply because they have committed a crime in order to survive is disgraceful and irresponsible. The fact that those responsible for putting these children into such danger are the authorities of your country, is even more upsetting to hear.

Any country which claims to be a democracy, even an emerging one, must surely be civilised enough to be able to treat children with the utmost respect and to protect them from any harm that may come to them, both on the streets and in the authority prisons. It must be remembered that our children are our future and if any of us wish for the world to even begin to become a more civilised place, they must be nurtured into growing up to become responsible human beings. Treating children and young adults in such a disrespectful manner will only brew future discontent and disrespect for authority.

Let us build a better future and protect the adults of tomorrow.

Yours Respectfully
